Helping Fido Beat the Heat

The Dog Days of summer are upon us! Hot weather can be tough on our canine pals. It’s also very dangerous for them. Fido doesn’t have many ways to cool off if he overheats, and he is wearing a fur coat. Read on as a local Pleasanton, CA vet offers some tips on keeping your furry friend cool and comfy this summer.

Water, Water, Water

First and foremost, make sure your canine buddy always has plenty of water. If you have a large dog, a big house, and/or multiple pets, you’ll want to set out some extra water stations, especially at this time of year. You may also want to consider getting a pet fountain or an automated waterer.

Summer ‘Do

Some dogs will be more comfortable with a stylish summer cut. Of course, this isn’t an across-the-board solution. Pooches with double coats, such as huskies, should not be clipped, as this can actually damage their fur. Ask your vet for more information.

Splash Around

Dogs are pretty adorable when they’re enjoying themselves. One cute way to get Fido’s tail wagging is to get him a kiddie pool to splash around in. Your furry pal may also enjoy playing in the spray from a sprinkler.

Cold Snacks

Nothing hits the spot on a sweltering day like a cold snack. If you really want to pamper your cute pet, buy or make him some doggy ice cream. You can also make Fido some frozen doggy treats. There are lots of great recipes available online!

Cool Bed

Your dog will definitely appreciate a cool, comfy napping spot. One option is to point a fan at it or above it. Just make sure your pup can’t knock it over! You can also get a cooling pad, or put a frozen towel on Fido’s bed.

Summer Schedule

You may want to make some tweaks to your pet’s schedule in the hottest parts of the year. Try not to walk or play with your canine companion during the hottest parts of the day. Save those strolls and play sessions for later, when it’s cooled off a bit. Taking your furry best bud for a long sunset stroll is a great way to end a summer day!
