Holidays With Cats

Happy Holidays! As far as we are concerned, no holiday scene is truly complete without a purring cat. As it turns out, Fluffy has a few holiday traditions of her own. Read on as a Pleasanton, CA vet discusses holidays with cats.

Some of our feline patients are fearless and friendly, and see guests as more laps to sleep in and more hands to give ear scritches. Others are, well, scaredy-cats, who will run and hide when the doorbell rings. If your pet falls into the latter category, offer her a comfy kitty retreat by putting a soft bed, toys, a litterbox, and food and water in a quiet back room. Fluffy may be purrfectly happy to sleep through the festivities!

Cats just can’t resist batting at shiny, dangly objects. That makes the holidays a dangerous time of year for them. Tinsel, light strands, tree needles, ornament hooks, ribbons, and shiny ornaments are all hazardous to playful kitties. Candles and potpourri burners are also unsafe. Keep these things out of reach of Fluffy’s cute little paws!

Don’t forget to pick up something for your cat! Beds are always great gifts, even for kitties that already have them. (In Fluffy’s book, there’s just no such thing as too many napping spots.) Toys and treats are also good options. If you really want to pamper your furry friend, get her some furniture of her own, like a cat tower, kitty tent, or tipi.

The Tree

One of Fluffy’s favorite holiday traditions is attacking the tree. You can’t really blame our feline pals for this: after all, to them, trees look like giant kitty towers hung with toys. You may want to get an artificial tree, which will be harder for your pet to climb. We also recommend putting the majority of the decorations on the top half of the tree. The only things you want within paws’ reach should be a few dull, unbreakable ornaments. If your cat is super-frisky, use fishing line to secure the treetop to the wall or ceiling.

Chilly December nights are great for relaxing with a seasonal movie and a purring cat. Enjoy some down time with Fluffy over the next few weeks!
